Global Consciousness Project (GCP) 2.0

Global Consciousness Project 2.0 extends Roger Nelson’s original experiment with a considerably larger network of quantum random-number generators. The new configuration tests whether global attention, regional events and focused group intention coincide with measurable structure in random data, suggesting the impact of consciousness on the RNG output.

  • Each proposed NextGen unit contains four independent quantum-random channels, with the planned worldwide network comprising 1,000 units and 4,000 channels.
  • Preliminary analyses suggest different spatial patterns for globally shared and regionally concentrated events, together with possible daily variations related to wakefulness.
  • Public databases, preregistered hypotheses and controlled group-intention experiments are intended to improve transparency and clarify where any anomalies enter the random-generation process.

Background

Roger Nelson’s original Global Consciousness Project began at Princeton University’s Engineering Anomalies Research laboratory in 1997. Nelson had been deploying portable random event generators to emotionally charged gatherings – the so-called Field-REG studies. These devices should produce perfectly random sequences but revealed non-random patterns during collective focus. Princess Diana’s funeral in September 1997 became a critical data point in the history of the project. Data from twelve devices revealed statistically significant deviations (p = 0.01) during the more emotionally charged periods.1Nelson (2018).

Motivated by the RNG data taken during these collective events, Nelson developed the Global Consciousness Project and over a twenty-year period his team deployed seventy random number generators and analyzed five hundred events. When the formal part of the project closed in 2015 (today, a dozen RNGs still collect data for exploratory comparisons with GCP 2.0), the overall statistics exceeded 7 sigma with odds against chance of one in a trillion.2Nelson (2019); McCraty et al. (2024).

By 2020, Nelson had approached Rollin McCraty, director of research for the HeartMath Institute, a California research organization investigating heart-brain dynamics and consciousness. HeartMath already operated the Global Coherence Initiative studying human physiology and Earth’s magnetic field. HeartMath agreed to take over the project and launched GCP 2.0 in 2023–24.3HeartMath Institute (2024); GCP 2.0 (2025a).

Device Architecture and Quantum Mechanics

The NextGen devices represent substantial engineering advances. Each unit contains four independent RNG channels. HeartMath plans to install one thousand units creating four thousand channels in total, nearly fifty times larger than the original GCP; with half the units clustered in groups of twenty across twenty-five major cities.4HeartMath (2024); GCP 2.0 (2025b).

Each RNG uses a zener diode, a semiconductor that normally allows current in one direction. These diodes run in ‘reverse bias’ in which a voltage gets applied backward. Electrons pile up at the junction barrier. Eventually enough accumulate that quantum tunneling occurs. Individual electrons randomly tunnel through, triggering an avalanche. This generates genuine quantum randomness.5GCP 2.0 (2025b).

NextGen units monitor underlying quantum processes, with voltage fluctuations as the noise source. If consciousness affects physical systems, researchers can pinpoint where in the generation chain anomalies appear.6GCP 2.0 (2025b).

Statistical Approaches and Early Results

GCP 2.0 employs multiple levels of analysis. Individual devices report ‘coherence measures’: departures from expected randomness. The twenty-device clusters are analyzed as regional units. Network Coherence involves statistics computed across the planetary array. Researchers run pairwise correlations checking simultaneous changes between device combinations. With four thousand channels, this creates an enormous correlation matrix.7McCraty et al. (2024).

Preliminary patterns have emerged. When major events capture worldwide attention, pairwise correlations jump higher than during smaller regional occurrences. For truly global events, correlations do not decay with geographical separation. For localized happenings such as baseball playoffs with mostly American interest, the Network Coherence effect weakens with distance from the epicenter. There is also a circadian (daily) component; effects look stronger when populations near devices are awake.8McCraty et al. (2024).

The October 2023 Israel-Hamas conflict provided an early test case. Hamas launched its attack around 06:30 local time on 7 October. Researchers examined a 24-hour window and found network deviations standing out from random expectation.9HeartMath (2024).

The project runs controlled experiments with heart-coherence meditation groups, typically around two thousand participants. Rollin McCraty, leads sessions where everyone attempts focused intention simultaneously. The network appears to respond.10HeartMath (2024).

The expanded scale enables new questions. With four thousand globally distributed channels, researchers can map how potential consciousness effects propagate spatially. The multi-stage quantum monitoring adds another dimension. If anomalies exist, do they appear in raw electron noise or only after processing?11GCP 2.0 (2025b).

Research Framework and Organization

The working hypothesis is that shared consciousness introduces subtle structure into data streams that should remain purely random. Large-scale collective attention during crises could create one type of effect. Small coherent groups generating focused intentions might create another. Researchers frame the RNG network as a detector array. If consciousness can nudge electronic quantum processes, what else might it influence?12GCP 2.0 (2025a).

The project operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers. Roger Nelson serves as founder and director. Rollin McCraty directs research operations. Dean Radin holds the chief scientist position with Ulf Holmberg handling senior analysis. Citizen scientists worldwide host devices in their homes.13GCP 2.0 (2025a).

The project runs transparently. GCP 2.0 maintains public databases and a hypothesis registry where predictions get recorded before data analysis, thereby preventing post-hoc pattern matching, with independent researchers able to access raw data.14Nelson (2018).
